Its finally here. The magic drug to help your pooch shed that extra flab was approved by the FDA on Friday. Produced by Pfizer Inc., Slentrol, is being seen as the long-awaited weight management tool for obese dogs. Nearly 5 percent of the 62 million strong dog population in the country is found to have been either alarmingly overweight or obese.
“This is a welcome addition to animal therapies, because dog obesity appears to be increasing,” said Stephen Sundlof, director of the Center for Veterinary Medicine at the Food and Drug Administration.
The drug seems to reduce the fat absorption capacity in dogs, also triggering sensations of satiety or fullness.
Slentrol, also called dirlotapide, is meant to be part of an overall weight management program that includes a complete and balanced diet and exercise. However it may cause some side effects including loose stools, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy and loss of appetite.
The FDA, however, has warned against the use of the drug in humans. So, dog owners might still have to wait for the magic pill to come their way.
