Jenny Gomes, a resident of Okahumpka, is one proud pet owner. And she has every right to feel so, because her beloved pet, a rust-coloured, long-haired Lake County Chihuahua, is on the way to claim the spot of being the smallest dog in the world.
Dancer weighs 18 oz and measures just 4.1″ from foot to the top of the shoulder and will complete its first year this June 8. Gomes is very happy for tiny Dancer as she waits for his birthday. she has planned a grand party for the occassion after which Dancer will be officially measured by the Guiness officials.
Dancer’s mother was rescued by Gomes when she was pregnant and abandoned by her owner, one of Gomes’ neighbour. She gave birth to two puppies. The first one was a normal-sized female and then came Dancer, only the size of a thumb at birth.
Dancer’s sister was adopted by someone but tiny Dancer and his mother stayed with Gomes.
Dancer’s tiny size even led to veterenarians suggesting Gomes to get the the puppy euthanized, but Gomes gave him a chance and Dancer proved that her decision was indeed a wise one.
Dancer has a meal every three or four hours because of his size and his only health problem is low blood sugar.
Gomes even received an offer of $5000 from a man at the veterenarian’s office who wanted to buy Dancer, but Gomes rejected the offer saying,
No way. You don’t sell love.
