A major manufacturer of dog and cat food which was selling its products under biggies like, Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other brands has recalled 60 million containers of its wet pet food on Friday. The cause of the recall is reports of kidney failure and deaths.

A number of cats and dogs were reported to suffer from kidney failures and about 10 were reported dead after consuming the affected pet food. However, the product testing hasn’t yet revealed the link, which can explain the cause of deaths and illness, Menu Foods said. The recalled products were made using wheat gluten which is a source of protein.

The recall lot includes the company’s ‘cuts and gravy’ style food. This pet food consisted of chunks of meat in gravy. It was being sold as cans and small foil pouches. Menu Foods will be revealing the full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall on their website by Saturday.

The company is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co. Menu Foods’ three U.S. and one Canadian factory approximately manufactures more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The company has alerted the Food and Drug Administration. The recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million.
