After the shock of mislabeled fur, the next one is here to strike us again. A short video that is a part of the huge campaign of the Humane Society of the United States can bring any fur lover to tears. The video shows a grey longhaired German shepherd puppy being hauled from its cage by the neck and is strung up by a wire noose helplessly, killing it in a way. It is then skinned alive. Heart breaking! Isn’t that?

Last week, the international animal rights charity exposed shocking new evidence that most of the coats purchased from the top-end US designer store, Nordstrom that also stocks designer labels including Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, were found to be trimmed with fur from domestic dogs, the fur however being advertised as fake. The reports actually suggest that the pelts from slaughtered cats and dogs are being passed off as ‘ethical’ fur.

The public outrage is increasing and the fashion industry is still feeling the shock and the heat waves. There has been a lot of news for some time about the increase in dog and cat fur in the global fur chain. But the whole scandal is stark naked now as the last weeks news finally serves the wake up call.

In an answer, the British Fur Association has signed up to a voluntary EU labeling scheme that will reassure the shoppers that its pelts are not faux or tainted with cat and dog fur. It also plans to launch the Origin Assured (AO) label, this autumn. This will specifically confirm that ‘a product comes from a country where national or local regulations or standards governing fur production are in force’. But the UK government has so far refused a ban on such imports.

China slaughters over two million cats and dogs every year to satisfy the Western demand for fur, thus exporting 50% of the fur to America. And street shops and internet too is proving a hindrance in the achievement of the concerned objective. Internet shopping means selling off cat and dog fur under guise to customers and fashion retailers online, without any questions being asked.

So, next time you find a real cheap faux piece you should know what you are in for...
