Pouches of special kitty food manufactured by Menu Foods, which retails at upmarket stores like Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway, Aldis and Schnucks is causing kidney failures in pets.
The food brand has been criticized for causing suspicious deaths of 16 cats and dogs. Paul Henderson, chief executive and president of Menu Foods, based in Canada said tha the company is unable to explain why a few pets that consumed company’s ‘cuts and gravy’- style wet food developed kidney failure and died. Although he didn’t particularly name any harmful constituent, but U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said the investigation is focused on wheat gluten.
The exact number of deaths caused is still not known, as there is no organized system of publicly reporting or investigating such cases at the local or state level.
College of Veterinary Medicine is investigating the exact reasons for the deaths, but meanwhile, Chris Beuoy, spokeswoman for the college suggests owners to avoid feeding their dogs and cats any canned or pouched food with a gravy base.
Three pet owners have already sued Menu foods and many more are thinking of taking a legal step against the pet food giant.
