Some of the Britain’s best-loved breeds including dachshunds, bulldogs could disappear in some few years due to the new animal welfare measures being adopted by the government there. The ministers in Edinburgh and London are in favor of approving a controversial treaty entertains hopes of setting strict limits on the breeding and handling of animals. The European Convention on the Protection of Pet Animals has divided people as supporters, who are mainly animal welfare groups and opposing group who are dog breeders basically.
Private talks have been taking place between the Scottish Executive and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) too. The convention terms that the breeders would be held accountable and answerable for any “anatomical, physiological and behavioral characteristics which are likely to put at risk the health and welfare of either the offspring or the female parent”. The treaty will put a full stop to distinctive breeds being produced by cross breeding. The treaty would also mean the outlawing of some 30 and 40 breeds. Even come cat breeds are likely to be affected.
Editor of Dogs Today magazine, Beverley Cuddy said breeders are exaggerating the impacts of ratification. She said, “All it means is that breeders would have to put the health of the dogs first instead of their appearance.”
