The U.S. Senate will discuss tomorrow the PAWS Bill, Pet Animal Welfare Statute of 2005, regulating breeders and online sales. The bill will mainly target the so-called ‘puppy mills’, breeding dogs and cats on wholesale basis, augmenting health problems amongst the breeds.

Puppy Protection Act, the 2001 version of the Bill was thwarted by opposition from many segments including sportsmen who breed hunting dogs and so-called “hobby breeders” or “show breeders” who breed cats and dogs to compete in shows. The PAWS again is facing opposition from the same segment.

The mechanical production of animals is a serious issue, doesn’t matter what the purpose is. Just like cloning, it is playing with nature and the original breeds of dogs and cats which get degraded after prolonged unbridled breeding.
